This winter, we are once again making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable dogs through our nationwide #BravectoCares initiative by sponsoring 21,500 doses of tick and flea treatments, valued at R7 million, to selected animal welfare organisations across South Africa.
For many of these organisations, parasite control is a persistent and challenging aspect of animal care. Dogs arriving often come from difficult circumstances, including neglect, abandonment or life on the streets, where exposure to ticks and fleas is common. By the time they enter this environment, many are already dealing with the discomfort and health complications associated with infestations.
The scale of the challenge can be significant. In animal welfare organisations, where large numbers of animals live in close proximity, ticks and fleas can spread rapidly between dogs and into the surrounding environment. Without effective treatment, infestations can quickly escalate, causing ongoing irritation, skin conditions, allergic reactions and increasing the risk of disease transmission.
The impact extends beyond physical discomfort alone.
Dogs suffering from tick and flea infestations are often stressed, anxious and uncomfortable. Constant scratching, skin irritation and inflammation can affect their behaviour, sleep and overall well-being. In many cases, this can also influence how potential adopters perceive them, making already vulnerable dogs less likely to find homes quickly.

Why long-lasting parasite protection matters so much
Unlike short-term treatments that require frequent reapplication, Bravecto® Chew provides 12 weeks of protection against ticks and fleas in a single dose. This extended protection helps animal welfare organisations break the parasite lifecycle more effectively while reducing the pressure on already stretched shelter resources and staff.
Ticks and fleas don’t only live on animals, they also lay eggs in bedding, kennels, grass and surrounding areas. Without consistent control, reinfestation can happen repeatedly, creating an ongoing cycle that is difficult to manage. Long-duration protection helps interrupt this cycle and contributes to healthier shelter environments overall.
For animal welfare organisations operating with limited funding and manpower, this type of support can have a tangible day-to-day impact. Fewer repeat treatments mean more time and resources can be directed toward rehabilitation, feeding, medical care and rehoming efforts.
The sponsorship also highlights the important role preventative healthcare plays in animal welfare. By helping dogs remain healthy and comfortable for longer, these organisations are better positioned to focus on emotional recovery and socialisation, both critical components in preparing dogs for adoption.
For communities, the benefits are broader than many people realise. Effective parasite control helps reduce the spread of ticks and fleas into surrounding areas and households, contributing to healthier pets and environments beyond shelter walls. Supporting animal welfare organisations with preventative care ultimately strengthens the wider animal welfare ecosystem and helps communities care for pets more responsibly.

Championing the Tireless Work of Local Animal Welfare Organisations
Importantly, initiatives like #BravectoCares also shines a spotlight on the incredible work these organisations across South Africa do every single day. Despite ongoing financial and operational pressures, animal welfare organisations continue to rescue, rehabilitate and care for thousands of animals in need, often relying heavily on donations, partnerships and community support to do so.
Through this sponsorship, Bravecto® aims not only to provide immediate relief to dogs in need, but also to support the long-term efforts of animal welfare organisations working tirelessly to give these animals a second chance.
“Building on the success of our previous #BravectoCares drive, we’re excited to once again be able to continue this commitment to improving the lives of pets, especially of those most in need,” said Dr Carolyn Chelchinskey, Business Unit Manager – Companion Animals, MSD Animal Health.
As winter places additional strain on organisations and the animals they care for, initiatives like this provide more than just treatment, they provide comfort, dignity and a better opportunity for dogs to find loving forever homes.
